Lavender Quality Planting Material Distribution Programes under Aroma Mission in Uttarakhand.

CSIR-IIIM, JAMMU

CSIR–Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, Jammu, under the Aroma Mission, undertook a comprehensive initiative to promote aromatic plant cultivation in Uttarakhand through the distribution of Quality Planting Material (QPM). These programes were organized across multiple locations in the state, targeting both progressive farmers and first-time cultivators to ensure broad adoption of aromatic crops as a sustainable livelihood option. The primary objective of these programes was not only to supply high-quality planting material of commercially important aromatic plants but also to impart scientific knowledge on their cultivation, processing, and market potential. Special emphasis was placed on the selection of varieties best suited to the agro-climatic conditions of Uttarakhand, ensuring higher yields, superior oil content, and better economic returns for growers.

In total, 577,050 Lavender QPM were distributed to 409 beneficiaries, including 100 women, covering an area of 80.28 hectares. The active participation of women farmers underscored the inclusivity of the initiative and its potential to empower rural women by providing them with the resources and skills needed for entrepreneurship in the aromatic plant sector. Along with distribution, CSIR–IIIM scientists and technical experts conducted hands-on training sessions covering topics such as land preparation, planting techniques, crop management, irrigation scheduling, organic pest control, harvesting methods, and post-harvest distillation practices. Participants were also informed about value-addition opportunities, quality control standards, and potential market linkages to maximize profitability.

The QPM distribution programes contributed not only to the expansion of aromatic crop cultivation in the region but also skill development of the farming community. By enabling farmers to cultivate high-value aromatic crops on a significant scale, these efforts are expected to enhance rural incomes, promote diversification from traditional crops, and create opportunities for micro and small-scale enterprises in the processing and marketing of aromatic products. Overall, this initiative has laid a strong foundation for sustainable agriculture, rural entrepreneurship, and women’s economic empowerment in Uttarakhand, aligning with the broader goals of the Aroma Mission to transform the aromatic plant sector into a driver of socio-economic growth.
