CSIR-IIIM, JAMMU
As part of the ongoing Aroma Mission Phase-III, CSIR-IIIM Jammu organized an awareness-cum-training program at Village Chausala in Almora district, Uttarakhand, on 20th September 2025. The program was aimed at promoting the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants such as Rosemary and Lavender, which possess immense potential for improving rural livelihoods and contributing to the aroma-based agro-economy. The key objectives of the program were to create awareness about the scope and benefits of cultivating Rosemary and Lavender. To provide farmers with scientific knowledge of cultivation practices, crop management, and processing techniques, highlight the industrial potential and economic opportunities associated with medicinal and aromatic plants and to promote sustainable agricultural practices and enhance soil health.
More than 40 members including 16 women actively participated in the program. Experts from CSIR-IIIM delivered technical lectures and practical guidance on scientific farming practices, use of quality planting material, and eco-friendly management methods. Farmers gained detailed knowledge of cultivation and management practices for high-value aromatic crops. Awareness was created about the industrial applications of Rosemary and Lavender and their role in developing rural entrepreneurship. The program motivated local farmers to adopt MAP cultivation as an additional income source, thereby helping to reduce migration from rural areas. The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to strengthening the aroma-based agro-economy in the region.
The awareness-cum-training program under Aroma Mission Phase-III successfully achieved its objectives by sensitizing farmers of Village Chausala about the potential of medicinal and aromatic plants. By adopting scientific practices and exploring opportunities in value addition, farmers can enhance their livelihood, ensure sustainable agricultural growth, and contribute to the overall development of the region.
