CSIR-IIIM, JAMMU

CSIR-IIIM Jammu organized a training program on 23rd September 2025 for farmers of Gram Panchayat Bhasari, Block Dhauladevi, District Almora, Uttarakhand. The focus of the program was on the cultivation and industrial potential of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) such as Rosemary, Lavender, and other high-value crops. This initiative aimed to build awareness among farmers about the scope of medicinal and aromatic crops in improving livelihoods, while also promoting sustainable farming and strengthening the aroma-based agro-economy in the region. The program was designed to educate farmers about the economic, industrial, and livelihood benefits of cultivating MAPs and introduce scientific cultivation practices, processing methods, and crop management techniques. It also Familiarize farmers with CSIR-IIIM’s Aroma Mission Phase-III schemes and related opportunities. Facilitate collaboration between Agriculture Department officials and farmers for grassroots-level implementation.

Farmers were given detailed information on the cultivation, harvesting, and processing of crops such as Rosemary and Lavender. Resource persons explained the wide industrial demand for essential oils and value-added products derived from aromatic plants. With the active involvement and application of the local Agriculture Department, the program was organized in collaboration to ensure practical outreach and training to local farmers.Farmers were briefed about the objectives, schemes, and support available under CSIR-IIIM’s Aroma Mission, including access to quality planting material and market linkage opportunities. Farmers expressed their interest in adopting aromatic crop cultivation and shared their willingness to participate in future training and capacity-building initiatives.

Farmers gained clarity about the economic viability and industrial demand for aromatic crops. Awareness was created about the benefits of scientific and sustainable farming practices. The program strengthened the linkages between CSIR-IIIM, the Agriculture Department, and local farmers, ensuring effective knowledge transfer.By adopting these practices, farmers in the Almora region can enhance their livelihoods, promote rural entrepreneurship, and contribute to building a strong aroma-based agro-economy in Uttarakhand.
