CSIR-IIIM, JAMMU
On 09/12/2025, under the CSIR–IIIM Jammu Aroma Mission Phase-III, an extensive farmer training and outreach program was conducted in Kurad Village, situated in the Tharali Block of District Chamoli, Uttarakhand. As part of this initiative, the project team carried out a systematic survey of the agricultural fields in the region. The team evaluated local agro-climatic conditions, soil suitability, and current land-use patterns, and on this basis, identified appropriate patches of land suitable for the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants.
During the training session, farmers were provided in-depth guidance on the cultivation practices of high-value aromatic crops such as Rosemary and Lavender. They were educated about improved agronomic techniques, including nursery preparation, plantation methods, irrigation requirements, disease and pest management, and post-harvest handling.
In addition, the participants were informed about the wide-ranging economic benefits associated with these crops. The team explained how the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants can enhance farmers’ income, particularly through value addition, processing, and market-linked industrial applications. The farmers also learned about opportunities for establishing small-scale processing units, essential oil extraction, and potential market demand from the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and fragrance industries. Overall, the program aimed to build awareness, enhance technical knowledge, and encourage farmers to adopt aromatic crop cultivation as a sustainable livelihood option.
